Backpacks for Hope! Happening Now!

It’s time for the 8th annual Backpacks for Hope backpack drive!  The Texas Advocacy Project collects 2,000 NEW backpacks and school supplies to distribute to children in domestic violence shelters across Texas.

If you haven’t heard of this organization, just know that the Texas Advocacy Project provides free legal services to help escape and end domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.  *Nearly 200,000 Texans were beaten by their intimate partners in 2017.  74% of all Texans either know someone who has been a victim of domestic violence or have been victims themselves.*

2017: Allstaters stuffing backpacks with school supplies.

These statistics are heartbreaking.  It is truly heartbreaking to know there are so many that live in fear and in abusive households, and it’s even more heartbreaking to know that so many of the victims are children. No child deserves to be abused or to live a childhood of fear.  Backpacks for Hope gives children and their mothers hope as they start a new school year with a new backpack full of new school supplies!  Please consider donating and GIVE HOPE!

Backpacks and school supplies can be dropped off at our office starting today, June 12th through July 27th.

Happy Holidays from the Biscoe Insurance Group, Inc!

Christmas is still a few weeks away, but since it’s National Christmas Card Day we thought it was the perfect opportunity to say Happy Holidays to all of Biscoe Insurance Group’s clients, workers, friends and families.

Biscoe-Christmas-Card

National Christmas Card Day is a time to celebrate an old holiday tradition that has transformed with the advent of the Internet. Sending out the family Christmas card through the mail use to be a must for everyone. Mailed cards are still popular today, but now you can send e-cards for free and even create animated cards that can be emailed to your loved ones.

A few of our favorite card creating resources are:

Hallmark.com – The worldwide greeting card aficionados have opened up their card-making shop to the general public. It can be a tad pricy, but you’ll get store-quality cards every time.

iPhoto 2011 – Mac users can produce beautifully made cards using their own photos and text, which can be printed for very reasonable prices. You can also get pre-addressed envelopes printed at the same time.

Blue Mountain – If you want variety Blue Mountain has all types of cards covered. They have print at home paper cards, postcards and ecards. The talking and interactive cards are especially fun.

Card Funk – The guys at Card Funk know how to have fun. Their hilarious animated ecards can be customized with your own message and face. It’s a great card option for the kids in your family.

Sending out Christmas cards isn’t the only way to send warm wishes during the holiday season. Here are a few more of our favorite ideas.

Ways to Send Warm Wishes for the Holidays

Whip up some sweets. When you take the time to make something for someone the thought really shows. And who doesn’t like sweets! A plate of hot cookies or homemade fudge is a great way to wish neighbors and nearby family members a happy holiday.

Send a winter wreath or bouquet. If you’re the crafty kind, try putting together a wreath or bouquet. It’s an inexpensive yet unique greetings gift that’s perfect décor for the season.

Make a small donation in someone’s name. There are many organizations that accept small donations that can be made in someone else’s name. From planting trees to “adopting” animals to helping out wounded veterans, find the non-profit you think will mean the most to the recipient and make a donation for them. Typically the organization will send them a thank you card, so they’ll still get something in the mail.

Join a caroling group. Nothing says seasons greeting like Christmas carolers. Spread the joy by joining or organizing a group in your area.

These are just a few ideas that can be added onto your card giving this Christmas. It’s our way of saying we’re thinking about you and hope you have a happy holiday!

When to Listen to Your Insurance Agent Instead of the Financial Advisor

We’ve discussed before how insurance can be a financial asset. Given that fact, it’s not uncommon for your financial adviser to offer up advice on which insurance policy you should open. But what if their suggestion isn’t the same as your insurance agent?

work-argument

If you find yourself in this situation it may be challenging to decide whose advice to take. Below are a few scenarios when it may be best to listen to your insurance agent instead of the financial adviser.

Complex Insurance Products

Dealing with complex insurance products such as universal life cash value life insurance can be tricky. There are a lot of little caveats, regulations and considerations. When you are in the market for a complex insurance product your financial adviser might not be as privy as the insurance agent on how everything works. It may be in your best interest to heed the advice of the agent.

Company Specific Questions

When you have questions about the insurance agent’s company or a company they work directly with, your financial adviser may not be the best person to turn to for answers. The insurance agent is a more direct source of information. The financial adviser is working from outside the company, which has its benefits, but whenever you need company specific information this outsider status might impede you from getting the best possible answers.

When the Agent is Highly Specialized

To a certain extent financial advisers have to be a jack-of-all-trades. They help you shape your entire financial portfolio so they have to be knowledgeable in a lot of different subject matter. Insurance agents on the other hand only handle insurance. Some may actually focus on one specific type of insurance.

When the insurance agent is specialized in the type of insurance you are looking for it’s usually suggested that you carefully consider their advice. This is especially true if it is a complex or new insurance product that your financial planner isn’t as familiar with. Anytime special certification or license is needed to create a policy definitely listen to the person with the appropriate credentials.

Having both an insurance agent and a financial adviser gives you the advantage of having two different sources of information. It’s important to keep in mind that they are both looking out for your best interests. Oftentimes they will agree on which route is the best one to take, while at other times their opinions may differ. Sometimes it’s just a matter of going with the person who has the most information at hand.
